About

Tonje M. Molyneux is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Preventive Pedagogy Specialist at Wellstream, the Canadian Centre for Innovation in Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use, in the MacIsaac School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, and a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in UBC’s Faculty of Education.

Her research treats school belonging as the foundation of universal prevention and student mental health: what belonging consists of in young adolescents’ own words, how it is shaped at the relational and organizational levels of schools, and how the adults responsible for it can measure and build it. She co-led the development of Canada’s first national standard for school-based substance use prevention, education, and intervention (2026) and led its implementation architecture.

Before her doctorate she spent a decade as a Senior Educational Designer at Committee for Children, co-developing the Second Step programs, and taught in elementary classrooms in Alberta and Japan. She holds a PhD in Human Development, Learning, and Culture from UBC (2025), is a CASEL Weissberg Scholar (2025–2027), and holds a SSHRC Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (2026–2028).
